My Story
A family member was suddenly and seriously ill. He arrived at my home with nothing but a large brown envelope stuffed with scattered notes — appointment slips, insurance paperwork, discharge summaries and doctor’s names scribbled on scraps of paper.
He couldn’t speak well because of recent surgery. He couldn’t keep his records straight. And in that moment, I became the one responsible for piecing it all together.
I sat at my dining room table with papers spread everywhere, frantically trying to build a picture of his medical history. Doctors wanted answers I didn’t have. Insurance companies asked questions I couldn’t easily answer. Every visit, every phone call, I wished I could just hand someone a single, organized binder with everything they needed.
For weeks, I lived in the same chaos that so many families face when crisis hits. And then, after his passing, I was left to close his final affairs — canceling accounts, notifying agencies, making sure nothing slipped through the cracks. That’s when the truth hit me:
Even the most organized families aren’t ready. My own mother keeps meticulous records — but if she were hospitalized or passed tomorrow, I wouldn’t know where to start.

Laura Holeyfield is the founder of VitalBinder™, a system created to simplify healthcare organization and support families during critical times. Her passion for the project began after caring for a terminally ill family member and witnessing firsthand the chaos of scattered records, missing information, and stressful decision-making. With a background in medical sonography from West Coast Ultrasound Institute, Laura blends compassion, practicality, and healthcare insight to design tools that bring clarity and peace of mind. Through VitalBinder, she is committed to helping individuals, caregivers, and executors access essential information easily and handle health and final affairs with confidence and care.
